Anand Mahindra
Anand Gopal Mahindra is an Indian billionaire businessman, and the chairman of Mahindra Group, a Mumbai-based business conglomerate.
He belongs to a famous business family. His father’s name is Harish Mahindra, industrialist and mother’s name is Indira Mahindra. Anand completed his early schooling from Lawrence School, Lovedale. Anand went on to study architecture and film making from Harvard University in 1977. He completed his Master of Business Administration – MBA from the Harvard Business School in Boston, in 1981.
Anand established a non-government organization, Nanhi Kali that supports education for underprivileged girls in India in 1996.
Anand joined the Mahindra Ugine Steel Company (MUSCO) in 1981. He was as an Executive Assistant to the Finance Director. In 1989, Anand became the President of MUSCO.
He expanded Mahindra Ugine Steel Company into the sectors of real estate development and hospitality. Anand was assigned the duty of Deputy Managing Director of India’s largest automobile company, Mahindra & Mahindra Group in 1991 which is amongst the top ten industrial houses in India. Anand became the Vice Chairman of Mahindra Group in 2003.
Anand Mahindra was a Co-Promoter of Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd. In 2003, Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd transformed it into a bank. Now, Kotak Mahindra Bank is one of the leading private sector banks in India.
The Mahindra & Mahindra Group introduced the Scorpio and an indigenously developed SUV in 2002 which helped give it a global identity and built positive impressions for the Mahindra Group. Thus, the company has developed through both Greenfield business development and acquisitions.
The company’s possession activities include the possession of Reva Electric Vehicles and Satyam Computer Services in 2009.
The group operates in the aftermarket, automotive, aerospace, finance, insurance, agribusiness, components, defense, energy, construction equipment, farm equipment, leisure, hospitality, industrial equipment, information technology, logistics, real estate, and retail.
Anand was noted as ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ by Forbes (India) for 2013. Anand was given the third-highest civilian award in India, the Padma Bhushan Award in January 2020.
Anand is also the Co-Chairperson of the World Economic Forum. For his outstanding contributions to the business field, he also received the Rajiv Gandhi Award. He received the Leadership Award from the American India Foundation. Anand was awarded the person of the year award from Auto Monitor. He is included by Fortune Magazine among the ‘World’s 50 Greatest Leaders’. and was in the magazine’s 2011 listing of Asia’s 25 most powerful businesspeople.
