Carl-Henric Svanberg
Carl-Henric Svanberg, is a Swedish businessman and current Chairman of Volvo. He was Chairman of BP for eight years, from 2010 to 2018.
Svanberg holds a master’s degree in applied physics from the Linköping Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Uppsala University. Svanberg holds honorary doctorates from Luleå University of Technology and Linköping University.
He was appointed in Asea after graduation in 1978 for various foreign assignments in project exports.
In 1986, Svanberg was appointed CEO of Securitas’s alarm operations, becoming vice-president of the group in 1988. After rapid expansion, ASSA merged with Abloy. As head of the Assa Abloy Group, Svanberg was involved in the acquisition of about a hundred companies all over the world. Carl-Henric Svanberg in 2003 was named president and CEO of lo makingTelefon LM Ericsson, the world’s leading maker of wireless telecommunications infrastructure equipment. One of Sweden’s historically most important and globally successful corporations, Ericsson abandoned its long-standing preference for selecting a CEO from the internal ranks, expecting that he would use his considerable personal skills and abilities to turn around the venerable Swedish telecommunications company. Coworkers and analysts described Svanberg as an exceptional communicator with a remarkable ability to inspire and motivate others.Svanberg accelerated cost-savings programs by cutting the labour force to 47,000, the lowest number in 35 years.
Efforts to improve operational efficiencies followed. Svanberg established “Operation Excellence” to identify opportunities for greater precision in operations, eliminated long-entrenched bureaucratic ways and create a simpler organization with more direct lines of responsibility. Organizational changes introduced at the beginning of 2004 eliminated management layers and reflected the importance. He served Ericsson, till turning it into profitable
Svanberg joined the BP board as chairman-designate on 1 September 2009, and succeeded Peter Sutherland as chairman on 1 January 2010.

He is Chairman of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) and Chairman of European Round Table (ERT). Member of the Advisory Board of Harvard Kennedy School.
